ON THE MARKETMIA CHAPLIN (b.1990) Adam & Eve £2,000 - 3,000 Here is a young, gutsy painter from South Africa. The image will not do justice to her technique which makes use of extremely thick application of paint. Her work shows the influence of artists like Cecily Brown, focusing on themes of flesh, paint, and the female body. This is a large piece (185 x 157 cm) and checks many boxes for “ultra-contemporary” female painters—currently hot investments. WAISTEL COOPER A Stoneware Bud Vase £180 - 220 If you’re looking to acquire a piece of studio ceramics, don’t miss the large sale at Adam Partridge’s in Cheshire on 15th November. With over 700 lots—many at very attractive price points—there’s something for every collector. My top pick? This piece by one of the greats, Waistel Cooper. It features a beautiful sgraffito finish and is priced too attractively to ignore. PATRICK PROCKTOR Vase of Orchids £1,500 - 2,000 Clean and crisp. Such a vibrant little watercolour of beautiful design. Enough said. ANDRE DERAIN Nu au bord de la mer £2,000 - 3,000 Derain’s colorful Fauvist landscapes can fetch tens of millions at auction. This, however, is one of his later works—often overlooked by the market, and usually with good reason, as they can be a bit, well, nasty. But this piece has a certain charm. Painted in the 1920s, when Picasso was creating his 'Classical' works, it appears to be influenced by that style. A huge name for a small price. WHAT THE ULTRA RICH BUYBanksy, Heart Balloon — purchased by Chris Martin for £395,000. The Coldplay frontman acquired the piece at a 2014 charity auction benefiting those affected by the Haiti earthquake. Reportedly, he outbid Kevin Bacon to win the work, which he then gifted to his then-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow. SLEEPERThis dinky little 30 cm panel recently sold at auction in France. Mislabeled as "19th Century School" and given a laughable estimate of just €500 - €800, it ultimately hammered down at an astonishing €190,000! I’m not sure who the artist is, but it appears to date from the late 15th century, likely by a skilled Florentine artist who excelled in small-scale work. Beauty. Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian ignited both outrage and existential despair after its sale. “If that’s art, then it’s the end of art, isn’t it?” lamented Bendor Grosvenor. Well, “some people don’t realize when they’re being played” said Marion Maneker of Puck. So who's holding the peel? Enter Justin Sun, the 34-year-old...
THIS WEEK: The green fairy, a fantastic foot, books, exhibitions & more. Keep on scrolling... Absinthe is making a comeback—or so says The Observer. Once banned for nearly a century, the emerald elixir has reclaimed its place in London’s trendiest bars. At Soho’s Three Sheets, for example, you’ll find the “Sazzaquack,” a zesty mix of rooibos-infused lemon absinthe. For generations of artists, though, absinthe wasn’t just a drink—it was a muse. Gauguin, Picasso, Degas, Manet, and Van Gogh not...
